Troy in Classical Literature

£10.00

David Soulsby, our resident classicist, will be giving an entertaining talk in the first-floor events room at the Star Inn, Alfriston on 21 November at 7 p.m, entitled “Troy in classical literature”.

The first half of the evening will explore evidence that Troy was a real place in the bronze age, and what Homer has to say about Troy in The Iliad.

After a break for some Greek wine, he will cover the two major references to Troy in Latin poetry: Ovid’s Metamorphoses and in particular the second book of Vergil’s Aeneid, which deals with the “Trojan” Horse and the sack of Troy by the Greeks.

Whether you’ve just become fascinated by the remarkable tales and the history behind them, or if you’ve been reading them with pleasures for years, David’s observations and ideas will stimulate and entertain in equal measures.

The £10 entrance fee supports Alfriston’s Village School.
