Meditations on Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant & Charleston - Louisa Albani
For the 10th anniversary of her press, artist Louisa Albani has produced a special appreciation for Charleston – the Sussex home of the Bloomsbury Group – and for the lives of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant.
In it, Louisa weaves together memories of Vanessa and Duncan's daughter Angelica Garnett's, with art and words inspired by their extraordinarily creative lives.
Louisa Albani's moving evocation of Charleston vividly captures the extraordinary legacy of the artists who created it, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. She brilliantly renders the flow of colour between landscape and interior, gardens and rooms, all suffused with the love that flourished there.'– Mark Hussey
“To visit, walk through and breathe in Charleston and its myriad forms of beauty is to experience the pure freedom of creativity, offering both a living work of art inscribed on the walls of a 17th century Sussex farmhouse, and a collective history of radical ideologies at a particular moment in 20th century British modernism,” says Louisa. “The house is not just the repository of the aesthetic experience but the aesthetic experience itself, a panoramic sketchbook that reveals a visceral diary of a life lived by two artists.”
The booklet includes contributions by Maggie Humm and Dominic Blake, and photographic contribution by Rachel Poulton.
